charge of a Fire Station. If you approve of my recommendation in

this matter I have to ask you to be so good as to give the usual

instructions to the Crown Agents, who should communicate with Mr

Badeley before deciding upon the merits of the different candidates

who may offer themselves.

It is very important that as there are only

unmarried quarters available in the Fire Station and owing to the

difficulty of finding quarters for Europeans of this class at a

reasonable rent, that the selected officer should be unmarried; and

if possible this should be made a condition of appointment. He will

be provided with bachelor quarters in the Fire Station, consisting

of one bedroom and the use of the common Mess room and recreation

room used by the European Members of the Erigade who are also Police

Constables and Sergeants, in addition to his salary, and with uniform,

fuel and light.
